Ons Jabeur v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

Jabeur leads Rogers 2-0 in their series, winning their last match in a qualifying round in Cincinnati in 2019.

Jabeur Overcomes Mandlik

The first winner on day 3 of the US Open was Ons Jabeur, but boy did she have to earn her ticket into the third round. The Tunisian was pushed to her absolute limits by the energetic American wild card Elizabeth Mandlik.

Jabeur won 7-5 6-2, although it was hardly as straightforward as the scoreline suggested. Mandlik went up a break twice in the opening set, playing some courageous tennis and chasing almost every short ball the Tunisian threw at her.

The young American even served for the first set at 5-4, but Jabeur’s veteran know-how and experience came to the fore. She produced a stunning drop shot on break point at 5-4 down before restoring her momentum.

Mandlik was left to rue that missed opportunity as Jabeur swept past the wild card firing 23 winners in the match.

Rogers Too Good for Kuzmova

For the fifth time in her career, Shelby Rogers booked her place in the third round of the US Open. Rogers, like Jabeur, won in straight sets but the results of the opening set could have been a whole lot different.

Rogers was broken in the fourth game of the first set to trail 3-1, but the World No. 183 Kuzmova could not keep up her hot start to the match. A succession of errors gave the American a window of opportunity to get back into the set which she duly capitalized.

Rogers won six of the next seven games to turn the match on its head. With a set in the bag, she began to loosen up and played more freely in the second where she only hit four unforced errors. Kuzmova, by contrast, posted 14 with just six winners.

The 31st seed will now be aiming to equal last year’s showing by reaching the fourth round, but she faces a major test against a player she has not beaten before.

Jabeur v Rogers Prediction and Tip

Jabeur has actually looked extremely vulnerable since the start of the North American hard-court season. The likes of Caty McNally (in Cincinnati) and now Mandlik have exposed a chink in Jabeur’s armor. But Rogers’ experience might be sufficient to finally conquer the Tunisian.
