Cameron Norrie v Holger Rune Head to Head

They have met twice before, and both those meetings took place this year with Norrie winning both of them.

On of those was a semifinal in Lyon and the other was a Round of 64 contest in Cincinnati. Interestingly both of the matches needed a deciding third set.

Norrie Sees Off Sousa Challenge

After a relatively easy first round win over Benoit Paire, it was a grind in the second for the seventh seed Cameron Norrie, who eventually advanced with a straight sets win against Joao Sousa but needed two hours and 27 minutes to accomplish that.

Both players exchanged an early break in the first set before Norrie broke again late in the set to take a one-set-to-love lead. In the second set, the Briton broke Sousa in the third game and then saved a break point in the very next game. He saved two more break points in the final game before winning it and taking a two sets lead.

The third set saw Norrie save a set point while looking to stay in the set at 5-6. He eventually claimed the set in the tiebreak and won the match 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

The World No. 9 had begun his campaign with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 victory over Paire.

Norrie, who reached his first ever Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon this year, had never gone past the third round at a major before. His best at the U.S. Open was a third round finish in 2020 and having matched that this year, he will be eager to go deeper. And given that he is in good form this year, there is a good chance of that happening.

The 27-year-old lefty has already featured in four finals, winning two of those titles and was also a semifinalist in his last tournament in Cincinnati last week.

Rune Advances as Isner Pulls Out

Holger Rune is making quite an impact this year. The 19-year-old was a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros; claimed his maiden title in Munich; and will now be playing in the third round of the U.S. Open for the first time.

The Danish player got a free pass into the round of 32 after his second round opponent John Isner withdrew from the tournament with a wrist injury. The American, who had a great start against Federico Delbonis, handed the walkover a day before his scheduled second round match.

Rune, ranked No. 33 in the world, had begun the tournament with a straight sets win over Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk. He saved all six break points and converted 3 of 14 to beat Gojowczyk 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in two hours and 32 minutes.

The 28th seed didn’t come into the tournament in the best of forms, having won just two matches in nine tournaments since his French Open quarterfinal defeat to Casper Ruud. But a good win in the first round would have made him feel a lot better. Can he upset the seventh seed in the next round?

Norrie v Rune Prediction and Tip

Norrie is the superior player in this contest. He has delivered consistently and is expected to keep his perfect record intact against Rune.
