Pablo Carreno Busta v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

They have met eight times previously and Khachanov leads 5-3.

The Russian has won the last three meetings, and that includes the win in the Olympic semifinal last year and also their only meeting this year, in Rome.

Carreno Busta Downs De Minaur

Two-time U.S. Open semifinalist Pablo Carreno Busta continued his march in this year’s tournament with a third consecutive four-set victory.

Having knocked out Dominic Thiem and Alexander Bublik in the first two rounds, Carreno Busta sent 18th seed Alex de Mianur packing in the third round on Friday to advance to the Round of 16 in New York for the third time in his ninth appearance.

The World No. 15 came out firing on all cylinders and had little trouble in winning the first two sets. De Minauar, who could win just two games in the heavily one-sided opening two sets, finally found some rhythm in the third set. He got the only break of the set in the eighth game and then served out the set to stay in the hunt.

Both players were on the money with their serve in the fourth set, which was eventually decided in a tiebreak. Carreno Busta edged the tiebreak to seal a 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory in two hours and 59 minutes.

The Spaniard had beaten Thiem 7-5, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 and then rallied past Bublik 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the first two round respectively.

A couple of weeks ago, Carreno Busta had captured his first Masters 1000 title by triumphing at the Canadian Open.

The three wins at Flushing Meadows has improved his season record to 31-18 and that also includes a run to the final of the Barcelona Open earlier this year.

Khachanov Advances As Draper Retires

Karen Khachanov is into the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career. The Russian advanced on Friday after Jack Draper’s promising debut ended in pain.

The Briton was forced to retire in the third set with a hamstring injury. Khachanov broke early in the first set and then kept the advantage intact through the first set to draw first blood.

The 20-year-old Draper, who has turned heads with impressive performances recently, lost serve early in the second as well, but he found his way back into the set and then edged ahead with a second break to tie the match at one-set apiece.

He was in the ascendency in the third set as well, building a 2-5 lead, but soon the injury began to bother him, allowing Khachanov to come back into the set. Draper eventually retired while 5-6 down in the third set.

Khachanov had won his first two rounds in four sets. In the opener, the World no. 31 lost the first set to Denis Kudla, before fighting back for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 victory. He also dominated the proceedings against Thiago Monteiro in round two, but dropped a set on his way to a 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory.

The 26-year-old, who was a finalist at the start of the season in Adelaide, has been one of the consistent performers this year. Against Carreno Busta, he will have the psychological edge, since he won the last three meetings between the two. But given how the Spaniard has been playing recently this promises to be a cracking contest.
