Tomljanovic Sees off Williams
Ajla Tomljanovic had the honour of being Serena Williams’ final opponent before she retired from the WTA Tour. Playing in a jam-packed arena with the crowd rallying behind Williams, Ajla dug deep to upset the 23-time Grand Slam champion 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-1.
Now ranked world number 46, also found herself in a demanding three-setter when she played Evgeniya Rodina in the preceding round. Nonetheless, she has been absolutely remarkable in New York this season – so much so that she has posted her best US Open results by reaching the fourth round.
Tomljanovic has got some wind in her sails as she arrived. She arrived the Flushing Meadows after a quarterfinal run (as a qualifier) in Cincinnati and the Wimbledon Championships.
She also made it to the same stage in Nottingham Open, Rabat Open, and Istanbul Cup. The clearly 29-year-old boasts of massive experience and is poised to put up a fight.
With Samsonova, the Aussie may find herself in a tough battle but one thing is certain – she will not go down easy.
