Daniil Medvedev v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

Kyrgios leads the rivalry 3-1, and also won their most recent matchup in the Round of 32 of the Canadian Masters.

In their only other meeting this year, Medvedev beat the Aussie in the second round of the Australian Open.

Kyrgios had also beaten Medvedev twice in 2019, once at the Italian Open and then in the Washington Open final.

Medvedev Eases Into Fourth Round

Three matches, three routine wins. That’s how defending champion Daniil Medvedev has gone about his business so far at the U.S. Open this year.

The Russian’s most recent victory came in an hour and 55 minutes over Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing in the third round on Friday.

The Chinese player had his moments during the match, particularly in the first set, when he broke the World no. 1 to draw level at 4-4. He also held a total of nine break points in the match but Medvedev saved 8 of them. The Russian more or less controlled the contest and breezed past Wu in the third set.

One of the highlights of the match was a 35-shot rally, the longest of the tournament, in the last game of the second set.

The reigning champion has reached the fourth round without dropping a set this week. He had begun his campaign with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 win over America’s Stefan Kozlov in the opening round and then raced past France’s Arthur Rinderknech 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 in round 2.

A lot will be at stake for the top seed in the next round as a defeat would not only dash his hopes of becoming the first player to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles since Roger Federer won five in a row from 2004 to 2008, but it would also make him lose his No. 1 ranking.

A losing record against Kyrgios isn’t too encouraging, but the fact that Medvedev has a far superior record at the U.S. Open and, in majors, in general, should give him the confidence going into this contest. Medvedev, who is 37-12 this season, has improved his U.S. Open record to 23-4. Apart from his run to the title last year, he was also a finalist in 2019 and a semifinalist in 2020. Can he reach the last eight for the fourth consecutive year?

Kyrgios Cruises Past Wolf

After eight failed attempts in the past, Nick Kyrgios has finally made it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open with a delightful straight sets win over America’s J.J. Wolf in the third round on Friday.

Kyrgios hit 21 aces and struck 36 winners on his way to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory. The Australian, who saved all seven of the break points that he faced in the match, barely looked in trouble during the one hour and 54 minute contest. The only time he was in real trouble was in the opening game of the third set, when he fell 0-40 behind yet managed to hold serve.

This was the second straight set victory for Kyrgios in the tournament. He had beaten Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the opening round. Interestingly he wasn’t broken in that match either. But he did drop a set in the second round before brushing aside Benjamin Bronzi 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a two hour and 56 minute contest.

Kyrgos had hit 30 aces and 65 winners in the second round win over the Frenchman.

Thanks to the three wins, Kyrgios is now 34-9 in 2022. He is 18-3 since the start of the Wimbledon, where he went on to finish runner-up to Novak Djokovic.

With Kyrgios playing at such a high level, Medvedev will have his task cut out. The blockbuster matchup promises to be the most entertaining match in the men’s draw this year and by all means it  should live up to the hype.
