Norrie Eases Past Another Opponent Without Dropping a Set

Seventh seed Cameron Norrie is through to the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in his career.

The World No. 9, who won his first two rounds in straight sets, didn’t drop a set in the third round either, defeating 19-year-old Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and 12 minutes.

The Briton had 18 break points in the match and he converted seven of them. His opponent had eight breaking chances and Norrie saved six of them. In all Norrie struck 26 winners, 10 fewer than Rune, but he also made just 22 unforced errors to the Dane’s 43.

Norrie had begun his campaign with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 win over Benoit Paire in the first round and he then defeated Joao Sousa 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round. The 27-year-old was broken just once each in the first two rounds and twice in third.

Thanks to the three wins, he is 44-19 this year. Norrie has featured in four finals in 2022, winning in Lyon and Delray Beach and finishing runner-up in Los Cabos and Acapulco. He also came to the U.S. Open in good form having reached the semifinals in Cincinnati.

Norrie also produced his best Grand Slam result this year, reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon. He had never gone past the third round of a major before that. It will be interesting to see if he can reach a second major quarterfinal with a win on Monday.

Rublev Shows Nerves of Steel

World no. 11 Andrey Rublev edged past Denis Shapovalov in a four-hour-and-eight-minute five-set thriller to reach the Round of 16 for the fourth time in his ninth U.S. Open appearance.

The Russian almost threw away the match when he failed to convert three match points on his serve at 5-4 in the final set, but he still managed to win the contest 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-6(10-7).

Shapovalov hit 23 aces and 76 winners to Rublev’s 9 aces and 38 winners, but it was the Russian who made just 37 unforced errors against Shapovalov’s 72.

It was the second time this week that Rublev emerged victorious in a five set contest. He had defeated Laslo Djere 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4 in the opening round but had a much easier second round, defeating Kwon Soon-woo 6-3, 6-0, 6-4.

Rublev, who reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2017 and 2020, has featured in five major quarterfinals, including at the French Open this year, but has never reached the final four.

He has a 39-14 record this season and has captured three titles in Marseille, Dubai and Belgrade. He will be bracing for another tough contest in Round 4 with hopes for reaching a sixth major final, but faces a man in top form in the next round.
