Carlos Alcaraz v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

Sinner has a 2-1 lead at the tour level and they are 2-2 including a lower-level meeting.

They have met twice this year and the Italian has won on both the occasions. He first beat Alcaraz in the Round of 16 at Wimbledon and then beat the Spaniard to lift the Umag Open title.

Alcaraz Outlasts Cilic in Five

In a fourth round match that went well past 2 am on Tuesday, Carlos Alcaraz outlasted 2014 champion Marin Cilic to book a place in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for the second straight year.

The World No. 4, who made quick work of his first three opponents, had to dig deep in the Round of 16 before registering a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory in three hours and 54 minutes.

Alcaraz was out-aced 3-14 in the match and he also hit 17 fewer winners than Cilic’s 45, but he made 25 fewer unforced errors to Cilic’s 66 and doubled faulted just four times in the match to the Croatian’s 13.

The 19-year-old was a break down early in the first set, but he responded with a double break and sealed the first set. The second set had a similar pattern but the roles reversed. It was Alcaraz who got an early break and Cilic who came back with a double break to tie the match at one-set all.

Alcaraz then got his nose in front by getting the solitary break of the third set in the last game, but a determined Cilic stayed in the contest by saving seven of seven break points in the fourth and converting one of five break points that he held in the set.

In the fifth, it was the World no. 17, who once again broke Alcaraz’s serve in the very first game, but the Spaniard fought back once again, winning the next four games in a row and taking control of the match. He didn’t make another mistake in the match to advance to a third major quarterfinal.

Alcaraz, who is yet to make a final four appearance in a Grand Slam, is two wins shy of 50 wins in 2022. He has won four titles from six finals this year, and those include two Masters 1000 titles in Miami and Madrid.

He began his U.S. Open challenge in style dominating Sebastian Baez in the opener before the Argentine retired in the third while twi sets down. Alcaraz then ousted Federico Coria in straight sets in the second round before making quick work of local hope Jenson Brooksby in a three-set third-round contest. He displayed his ability to handle pressure in a tough five-setter on Monday night and will hope to continue the winning run in the quarterfinals.

Error-Prone Sinner Scrapes Past Ivashka

Jannik Sinner scraped past Ilya Ivashka in the Round of 16 to reach a maiden U.S. Open quarterfinal. The 21-year-old Italian has now reached the last eight of all four Grand Slams, thus becoming the youngest player to achieve the feat since a 20-year-old Novak Djokovic did that in 2007-08.

But Sinner won’t be too happy with his performance in the fourth round, as the Italian was error-prone, double faulting 15 times and making 55 unforced errors in all. There was a time when the World No. 13 seemed to be cruising at 6-1, 4-2, but Ivashka came back to even things up in the second set. Then Sinner surged ahead again in the third, only to see the Belarusian draw level in the fourth.

In the decider, Sinner broke in the very first game, but Ivashka broke twice in the next three to take a 1-3 lead. Sinner then fought his way back into the set and the contest, breaking the World no. 73 three more times and winning the last five games in a row to complete a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory in three hours and 48 minutes.

Sinner held a staggering 26 break points in the match and he converted 12 of them. His opponent meanwhile had 14 chances to break the Italian and he capitalised on eight of those chances.

A six-time champion at the tour level, Sinner is 42-11 this season and won his only title of the year in Umag againt Alcaraz.

He began his U.S. Open campaign with a five-set win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier and then hurried past America’s Christopher Eubanks in straight sets in the second round. He dropped the opening set against Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 32, but came back well to seal the match in four. He will have to tighten his game as he chases a maiden Grand Slam semifinal spot.

Sinner has won both his matches against Alcaraz this year and that would give him a slight psychological advantage going into this contest. But overall Alcaraz has had a better season in terms of the number of titles that he has claimed this year. It promises to be a very close contest and may go the distance.
