Rublev Knocks Out Norrie

Andrey Rublev moved into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open for the third time in his career after he knocked out seventh seed Cameron Norrie in straight sets on Monday.

In a two-hour-and-26-minute rain-interrupted contest, Rublev struck 11 aces, 30 winners and just 17 unforced errors on his way to a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Norrie didn’t hold a single break point in the first set and squandered the only one he had in the second. He did capitalise on the solitary break point he held in the third set to even the set at 3-3, but Rublev broke for a second time in the final game of the set to wrap up the contest and send the Briton packing.

In all, Rublev converted half of the eight break points that he held and saved 1 of 2 that he faced.

With the win, Rublev improved his 2022 record to 40-14. He has featured in three finals this year and won all three of them in Marseille, Dubai and Belgrade. This is the second time that Rublev has reached a major quarterfinal this year, following a last eight appearance in Roland Garros, where he lost to Marin Cilic.

On Wednesday, the Russian will be making his sixth quarterfinal appearance in Grand Slams, with hopes of advancing to the semifinals for the first time.

Rublev’s journey in the tournament so far has been mix of dramatic nail-biting finishes and one-sided affairs. He needed five sets to see off a determined Laslo Djere in the opening round and then breezed past Kwon Soon-woo in straight sets in round 2. The World no. 11 then fended off the 19th seed Denis Shapovalov in a five-set third round contest, before easing past Norrie on Monday.

Tiafoe Stuns Nadal

Unbeaten in the first three majors this year, Rafael Nadal had extended his record to 22-0 in Grand Slams following wins in the first three rounds at the U.S. Open. But that unbeaten run ended on Monday after a stunning performance from Frances Tiafoe knocked out the 22-time Grand Slam champion.

The American played at a very high level to earn this biggest win of his career, against the World no. 3 (He had also beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas when he was ranked NO. 3 but that win came in . He looked in disbelief and wiped off tears after making the first quarterfinal at the U.S. Open and the second in the majors. Earlier he had reached the last eight at the Australian Open in 2019.

Tiafoe had not dropped a set in the first three rounds in New York this year, but lost one against the second seed on Monday, but despite losing a set, he carved out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The World No. 26 struck 18 aces and 49 winners to Nadal’s 9 aces and 33 winners. He made two more unforced errors than Nadal’s 26 but double faulted just four times compared to Nadal’s nine.

In terms of service breaks, Tiafoe got the solitary break of the first and the third sets and Nadal got the only break of the second set. In the fourth, the former No. 1 got an early break to build a 1-3 lead, but Tiafoe roared back breaking the Spaniard thrice and winning five consecutive games to score a sensational victory.

Tiafoe had beaten Marcos Giron, Jason Kubler and 14th seed Diego Schwartzman all in straight sets in the first three rounds.

Thanks to the four wins, the 24-year-old is 25-18 in 2022. This will be his fifth quarterfinal appearance of the season. Twice he has gone past the last eight stage, finishing runner-up in Estoril and falling in the semis in Atlanta.

Coming off what could be seen as his biggest performance on a tennis court, Tiafoe will be high on confidence going into the quarterfinals. Also the fact that he beat Rublev in a five-set thriller at Flushing Meadows last year will add to his confidence. He will brace for another long duel with the Russian and it won’t be a surprise if he takes down the ninth seed, who himself is trying to end his quarterfinal jinx in majors.
