Not many would have pegged the number 27 seed Karen Khachanov to make it this far when the tournament started. And yet, he is set for his first Grand Slam semifinal.
In the quarters, the 26-year-old Russian dismantled Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-4 in a late-night affair on Tuesday lasting for three hours and 41 minutes.
It was a battle of endurance and skills where Karen’s composure and tenacity got him through. While he had only 63 winners to Kyrgios’s 75, he committed only 31 unforced errors – almost half as his opponent.
In the preceding round, Khachanov found himself in a similar five-setter with Pablo Carreno Busta; before that, he cleared his matches with relative ease against Jack Draper, Thiago Monteiro, and Denis Kudla.
Now ranking World No. 31, Karen is 31-20 as of Tuesday for the season – with the runner-up feat in Adelaide International in January being his sole prominent feat. He did reach the semifinal in a couple of other events, but on the whole, most of his season has gone by in mid-round exits.
Moreover, his build-up to the US Open wasn’t that great either, as he lost in round two in Montreal, round one in Cincinnati, and the third round in the Citi Open.

Ruud Dismantles Berrettini
Casper Ruud, now ranked World No. 7, is poised to deliver his best season on record yet. At 23 years old, he is looking rather confident of reaching his second Grand Slam final in a calendar year.
His last such feat was the French Open, where he fell to Rafael Nadal in the final. But this time, with no big guns in the picture, Ruud is the second favourite to win the US Open 2022 with 3/1 after Carlos Alcaraz.
Ruud’s journey into the semis has been a relatively smooth one. He moved past Matteo Berrettini 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(4) in the final eight. Most of his matches have been easy ones – notably against the likes of Kyle Edmund, Tim van Rijthoven, and Corentin Moutet. Casper did face some resistance from Tommy Paul in the third round but managed to subdue the American in five sets.
With these five wins, Ruud has improved his tally to 43-15 – supported by three ATP 250 titles and two runner-up feats from Miami and Paris.
Most recently, he was a semifinalist in the Canadian Open as well. Compared to Khachanov, his pedigree is far superior.
