Carlos Alcaraz v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Tiafoe won their only meeting in Barcelona last year.

Alcaraz Outlasts Sinner in a Thriller

Carlos Alcaraz fired in a fifth ace of the match and then fell flat on the court in disbelief. The 19-year-old was into his first major semifinal after seeing off Jannik Sinner in a five-hour-and-15-minute contest which ended at 2.49 a.m. No U.S. Open match has ever ended this late, with the previous record being a 2.26 a.m. finish in 2014.

In a cat-and-mouse game, Alcaraz took the first set, then lost two tiebreaks in a row. The Spaniard then fended off a match point in the fourth set before drawing level and forcing the decider. He found himself a break down in the early exchanges of the fifth set, but rebounded yet again, winning the last four games of the match and pulling off a sensational victory.

The World No. 4 now has a great chance of becoming the top-ranked player in the world. It’s a three-way race for the No. 1 ranking with Casper Ruud and Rafael Nadal also in the mix. Both Ruud and Alcaraz must reach the final to claim the top rank. If both reach the final then the winner becomes the No. 1 player and if neither makes the final then Nadal goes to the top of the rankings.

Alcaraz has had a fabulous year so far and Wednesday’s win improved him to 49-9 in 2022. The trophy-laden season has seen him claim four titles from six finals and two more wins could hand him the biggest title of the season.

It was a second straight match when the Spaniard had to battle past an opponent in five sets. He had taken down the 15th seed and 2014 champion Marin Cilic in five in the previous round on Monday.

Alcaraz didn’t have much trouble in the initial rounds, easing past Sebastian Baez, Federico Coria and Jenson Brooksby without dropping a set.

Wednesday’s match was a hard hitting, pulsating contest with both players raising their games to another level and also showing great athleticism and a huger to succeed. Alcaraz had 26 break points in the match and he converted 11 of them. In contrast Sinner had 16 opportunities to break Alcaraz and he capitalised on 7 of those chances.

The Italian struck 61 winners and 63 unforced errors, while the Spaniard hit 58 winners and 38 unforced errors. In all there were a total of 382 points played in the punishing contest with Alcaraz winning 199 of those, 16 more than his opponent.

Tiafoe Takes Down Rublev

Frances Tiafoe’s surprise run at the U.S. Open continued as the World No. 26 ousted World No. 11 Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals of Wednesday to reach a maiden Grand Slam semifinal.

Tiafoe, who had previously reached just one major quarterfinal at the Australian Open in 2019, became the first American man to reach the final four at the U.S. Open in 16 years. Andy Roddick was the last man to achieve the feat in 2006. It was the year when Roddick finished runner-up to Roger Federer.

It’s already a huge achievement for Tiafoe to have ended that 16-year drought, but the American wouldn’t want it to end there. He has been in sublime form throughout the tournament, winning four of his five matches in straight sets and will like to keep that form going in the semifinals.

The only match when he dropped a set in this tournament was against the 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round. Despite losing a set, Tiafoe took the game to the second seed and upset him in four sets for the biggest win of his career.

On Wednesday, Tiafoe picked up from where he left against Nadal and extended Rublev’s winless run in Grand Slam quarterfinals to six matches. Tiafoe struck 18 aces and 46 winners to beat the Russian 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-0), 6-4.

The two hour and 36 minutes contest saw neither player dropping serve in the first two sets, with Tiafoe getting the only break of the match in the third set. He saved all four break points held by Rublev during the match. One of the highlights of Tiafoe’s performance was the number of net points that he won during the game. he approached the net 41 times and won 31 of those points.

Tiafoe has now improved his season record to 26-18. The 2022 Estoril Open finalist began his U.S. Open campaign with consecutive straight set wins over compatriot Marcos Giron, Australia’s Jason Kubler and Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman in the first three rounds respectively. It’s been a dream run so far for the 24-year-old. Can that dream extend for another night?
