Iga Swiatek v Ons Jabeur Head to Head

It is 2-2 from their four meetings. Swiatek won their first meeting in Washington in 2019 in three sets. Then Jabeur won in Wimbledon in 2021 in three.

The Tunisian then beat the Pole a second time in 2021 in straight sets in Cincinnati.

Most recently they met at the Italian Open final this year, with Swiatek sprinting past Jabeur in straight sets.

Swiatek Rallies Past Sabalenka

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek rallied from a set down to oust sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal of the U.S. Open.

Swiatek bounced back after losing the first set to force the decider, and then had to come back from a break down twice in the final set before sealing a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory in two hours and 11 minutes. The defeat ended the Belarusian’s campaign in the semifinal for the second straight year.

Both players held 10 break points in the match, with Swiatek converting 7 and saving 5. The 21-year-old, who won the French Open title for the second time this year (she had also won in 2020), is now a win away from claiming her first Grand Slam outside Roland Garros.

Her journey to the final in New York has been pretty smooth. She started off with straight set wins over Jasmine Paolini, Sloane Stephens and Lauren Davis in the first three rounds respectively and then needed to come back from a set down to oust Jule Niemeier in the Round of 16. She had a nervy start in that match but she was in cruise control of the second and third sets. Swiatek then edged past Jessica Pegula in a closely contested two-set quarterfinal.

Thanks to the six wins at the U.S. Open, Swiatek has improved her season record to 56-7. She has dominated the women’s game this season, claiming six consecutive titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and Roland Garros, during a 35-match unbeaten run. He streak ended at 37 matches after she went down in the third round at Wimbledon and that started a bit of a slide for the Pole, who lost early in four consecutive tournaments.

But she is back in form at Flushing Meadows. Can she capture a third major title of her career and a second in 2022?

Jabeur Makes Quick Work of Garcia

Carolina Garcia had entered her maiden major semifinal in top form, having claimed the Cincinnati Open champion in the run-up to the last major and having decimated her first five opponents at the U.S. Open. But despite that form she could was no match against the dominant Ons Jabeur in the semifinal.

The Tunisian has been a model of consistency in the last two season and she was on top of her game on Thursday as she breezed past the Frenchwoman in just 66 minutes, thus ending the latter’s 13-match win streak.

Jabeur didn’t face a single break point in the semifinal and had needed just 23 minutes to claim the first set. She was in control of the second as well, getting the solitary break in the fourth game and then holding on to the lead to reach her second straight major final.

The 28-year-old, who reached her first major final in Wimbledon, missed out on the title after going down to Elena Rybakina. Now she has a second chance of becoming a Grand Slam winner. She has dictated her terms in most of the matches leading up to the final, and that began with back-to-back straight set wins over Americans Madison Brengle and Elizabeth Mandlik. She was tested in the third round by Shelby Rogers, who is the only player to have taken a set of the Tunisian in the tournament. But Jabeur recovered after dropping the opening set to go past the third round at Flushing Meadows for the first time in her career.

Jabeur then put up solid performances against 18th seed Veronika Kudermetova and Ajla Tomljanovic, before cruising past Garcia.

Jabeur is 44-13 this season and will be playing in her sixth final of the season. She won the titles in Madrid and Berlin and finished runners-up in Charleston, Rome and Wimbledon. It’s a second consecutive year when Jabeur has recorded 40+ wins in a season. Last year, she had 48 wins and she seems well placed to overhaul that this year, but will that also include a win in the U.S. Open final?

Swiatek is 9-1 from 10 previous finals and 6-0 in title clashes this year. In contrast, Jabeur has a 3-6 overall record in the finals and she is 2-3 from finals in 2022. The stat clearly suggests that the Polish player is better equipped to absorb the pressure of a final. She also demonstrated that against Jabeur in Rome this year, when she outclassed the Tunisian 6-2, 6-2 in the title match.

So Swiatek will be the favourite to win this contest. Jabeur may take a set, but eventually the Polish player could win another Slam in a highly successful season.
