Casper Ruud v Carlos Alcaraz Head to Head

Alcaraz leads 2-0; they last met in the Miami Masters final earlier this season, where he won 7-5, 6-4.

Alcaraz Set for the No. 1 Ranking

Should Carlos Alcaraz win the US Open 2022, he will become the World No. 1 when the ATP rankings are updated on Monday.

Considering the splendid season he has had so far, it is not too big of an ask from the 19-year-old Spaniard. He arrived in New York with a tally of 44-9; over the last two weeks, he has improved to 50-9.

Carlos has played with absolute resiliency and grit at the Flushing Meadows. After winning his opening three matches in straight sets against Sebastian Baez, Federico Coria, and Jenson Brooksby, he kicked things up a notch to stake his claim as the player to bet on the ATP Tour.

There is a reason why bookmakers have hesitated going against him. Alcaraz was the second favourite to win the tournament after Daniil Medvedev. Following the early exit of the Russian (and later Rafael Nadal), the current No. 4 pretty much found the tournament to be his to lose.

Of course, it was not an easy campaign as he found himself in marathon five-setters with Marin Cilic, Jannik Sinner, and most recently, Frances Tiafoe.

He beat Cilic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in roughly four hours, Sinner 6-3, 6-7(7), 6-7(0), 7-5, 6-3 in five hours and 18 minutes, and Tiafoe 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3 in four hours and 22 minutes.

Clearly, Alcaraz is not the one to go down easy.

Over the course of the season, he won the titles in Rio, Miami, Barcelona, and Madrid – in addition to reaching the finals in Hamburg and Umag. There is no dearth of the top 10 players he has beaten, including the veterans and youngsters.

Ruud, Equipped to Put up a Fight

By contrast, World No. 7 Casper Ruud did not have as demanding of a campaign compared to Carlos.

The number five seed found himself in only one five-setter – with Tommy Paul in round three. Apart from that, he beat the likes of Kyle Edmund, Tim van Rijthoven, Corentin Moutet, Matteo Berrettini, and Karen Khachanov with relative ease.

As a result, the 23-year-old Norwegian may also be better rested for the upcoming final.

Ruud is now 44-15 – backed by his runner-up feat in the French Open and Miami Masters. He also won the Argentina Open, Geneva Open, and Swiss Open titles.

Casper also enjoyed a better build-up to the Slam in Flushing Meadows as he reached the semifinal in the Canadian Masters.

As for Ruud’s big wins of the season, they came over the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cilic, Hubert Hurkacz, Reilly Opelka, and Alexander Zverev. His top-10 victories resume may seem slim compared to Alcaraz, but Ruud can make up for it with his superior experience.

Alcaraz v Ruud Prediction and Tip

At 10/21 with bet365, Alcaraz is the favourite to win the final. Given the amount of effort he has put in and his overall year – marked with a litany of high-profile wins – it is hard to imagine him losing this one.

But looking at Ruud, who is at an appealing 7/4, a case can be made for the Norwegian.

Punters may also want to consider the handicap betting market, offering margins of +3.5 games on Ruud. Similarly, we can also expect this match to see a fair number of sets, with the odds on this being a five-setter at an attractive 5/2 with bet365.

Tip: Alcaraz to win, Over 37.5 Games: 15/8 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
