Carlos Alcaraz v Casper Ruud Head to Head

Alcaraz beat Ruud 6-2, 6-4 in Marbella quarterfinal last year and then beat him again in the Miami Open final this year.

Carlos Alcaraz is making it a habit of winning five-set thrillers. On Friday, for the third consecutive round, Alcaraz held off an opponent in five sets to reach his maiden Grand Slam final.
In what turned out to be another humdinger, the World No. 4 battled past Frances Tiafoe 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 in four hours and 19 minutes to set-up a title clash with Casper Ruud. The winner of the final will not only claim his first Grand slam title but will also become the No. 1 player in the world.
Alcaraz, who didn’t drop a set in the first three rounds against Sebastian Baez, Federico Coria and Jenson Brooksby respectively, outlasted Marin Cilic in a three-hour-and-54-minute five-set fourth-round contest and then saved a match point during a five-hour-and-15-minute five-set quarterfinal win over Jannik Sinner on Wednesday.
The semifinal win over Tiafoe was Alcaraz’s 50th win in a season where he has already captured four titles and finished runner-up twice. Two of those titles came in ATP 1000 events in Miami and Madrid and two came in ATP 500 tournaments in Rio and Barcelona. It just goes to show the mental toughness of the 19-year-old to not just survive but to dictate terms in big tournaments.
On Friday, Alcaraz landed 70% first serve points (105 of 150) and won 74% of those. He also struck 59 winners during the match and converted 9 of 20 break points while saving 4 of 7.
While the Spaniard would be proud of how he has fended off his opponent over the last three rounds, one area of concern would be his inability to prevail in tiebreaks. He is 0-4 in the tournament, having lost both the tiebreaks against Sinner in the quarterfinal and both the tiebreaks against Tiafoe in the semifinal. Tiafoe on the other hand won eight out of eight tiebreaks at this year’s U.S. Open.
Alcaraz’s Sunday’s opponent Ruud, meanwhile has had a mixed run in the tiebreaks and will enter the final with a 4-3 record in the final.
The Spaniard’s dominance over Ruud, his ability to lift his game in big tournaments and form, everything makes him a favourite to win, but he will be playing in a major final for the first time against a player, who played in a Grand Slam final not long ago.

Ruud Holds Off Khachanov
Casper Ruud marched into a second Grand Slam final with a four-set win over Karen Khachanov on Friday.
The Norwegian was cruising after the first two sets, but a fired-up Khachanov fought back by claiming the third. Ruud thwarted the comeback bid of the 27th seed in the fourth set and claimed a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory in exactly three hours.
The win was the World No. 7’s 44th this year. He has already won three titles (Argentina Open, Geneva Open and the Swiss Open) and finished runner-up in two big tournaments (to Alcaraz in Miami and to Rafael Nadal in the French Open. Now Ruud has a second shot at a Grand Slam title and also just his third opportunity to win a tournament that’s above ATP 250. All of Ruud’s nine titles so far have come in ATP 250 tournaments.
Always seen as a clay court specialist, Ruud showed a glimpse of what he is capable of in Miami and if there were still doubts about his ability on hard courts, he put them to rest at Flushing Meadows.
Ruud began the tournament with a straight sets win over Kyle Edmund. He then came back from a set down to send Tim van Rijthoven packing in round two. Tommy Paul in the third round turned out to be his toughest opponent, taking the Norwegian to five sets, but Ruud raced to victory by bageling the American in the deciding set.
Ruud then saw off Corentin Moutet in four in the fourth round and pulled off a brilliant straight sets win over Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinal.
It will be interesting to see if he can pack a punch in the final.
