Zhang is 8-3 From Last Three Tournaments

Shuai Zhang has been in decent touch recently. In her last three tournaments, the 33-year-old Chinese player reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati and Cleveland and the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time in her career.

Zhang brings an overall season record of 31-23 into the tournament and she is 19-13 on hard courts. The World No. 29 won her only title of the season on hard by beating Dayana Yastremska in the Lyon open final. It was her third title of her career.

A couple of months later she also reached the final in Birmingham, but finished runner-up to Beatriz Haddad Maia.

This is her second appearance in Tokyo. Eleven years ago, she lost in the opening round on her her debut.

Hontama Receives a Wild Card

Facing Zhang is 23-year-old Japanese Mai Hontama, who has received a wild card for the event.

The World no. 189 has mostly featured in lower level tournaments this year. Last year she had made her Tour-level debut at the Chicago Fall Classic, reaching the quarterfinals of that tournament. She has played just three more tour level events since then.

These are early days on the tour for the Japanese and she will hope to make an impression soon. Hontama has an overall record of 24-20 from all levels this year and she is 14-13 on her preferred surface — hard courts.

She has lacked consistency this season, but has found some good form in September, reaching a semifinal and a quarterfinal in two ITF events this month.

A two-time ITF champion from six finals, Hontama will aim to get off to a good start in front of her home crowd.

Zhang v Hontama Prediction and Tip

Zhang is the favourite in this match. Form and experience both favour the Chinese and she should sail into the next round for a meeting with second seed Caroline Garcia, who has a first round bye.
