Gilles Simon v David Goffin Head to Head

The pair have played each other five before, and Goffin leads their head to head series by three match to two.

Simon won their first match at Queen’s Club in 2915, and their third at the Shanghai Masters in 2017, sandwiched between which was a win for Goffin at the Miami Masters.

Goffin, though, has won their last two matches, both on French soil, at Montpellier in 2018 and in Marseilles a year later.

Simon on the Final Stretch

Simon has already made the decision to retire at the age of 37 at the end of the season, so this event, where he has been given a wild card, is very much part of the final stretch of his career.

And, when he finally hangs up his racket, he has a lot to look back on with pride, having appeared in 22 senior finals and won 14 of them.

He will have particular affection for this tournament as well – he won it in 2010, 2013, and 2018, and was the beaten finalist in 2015.

His last win on the main tour was back in June when he was beaten in the second round in Rosmalen by former world number one, Daniil Medvedev.

Since then he has flitted between the main and Challenger tours without much success, and failed to qualify for Wimbledon and the US Open.

Goffin’s Poor American Hard Court Season

Goffin would have been higher ranked had he been awarded the points he would normally get for reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon this year.

That was one of the highlights of his season, probably second only to winning the event in Marrakech in April, his first tournament victory in more than a year, and his sixth in all on the senior tour.

However, his recent form has been disappointing and he had a poor American hard court season, where he suffered five consecutive first round losses – in Washington, Montreal, Cincinnati, Winston Salem, and at the US Open.

He has since returned to winning ways playing for his country, winning two out of his three Davis Cup ties for Belgium in their Davis Cup World Group, but will now want some individuals wins to go with that.

Simon v Goffin Prediction and Tip

Although all the home crowd will be backing the imminent retiree, Goffin will start the heavy favourite for this match as he looks to put his travails on American hard courts behind him. He knows that, at this level of sport, there is no room for sentiment.
