Joao Sousa v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Wawrinka won on every occasion.

Two of those meetings came at Wimbledon – in 2014 and again a year later – and that was sandwiched by a meeting at the Madrid Masters in 2015.

Sousa has yet to win a set off the Swiss.

Sousa Enjoying His Best Season for Years

Sousa has enjoyed his best season for a number of years, winning the Maharashtra Open in February, and then finishing runner-up in Geneva, only losing to Casper Ruud in a third set tie-break.

And, as a  result, he has rebounded up the world rankings, having looked, at one point, as if he might drop out of the top 100.

Good results, more recently, have been harder to come by, and he only won one match in a two month period.

He did, though, make the second round of the US Open before losing to Cameron Norrie, and won both his singles matches playing for Portugal in the Davis Cup against Brazil.

Wawrinka’s Competitive Spirit is Undiminished

Recently Wawrinka dropped broad hints that he may shortly be following compatriot Roger Federer and Serena Williams into retirement with a series of injuries, each of which takes longer to recover from, all taking their toll.

However, he still loves the game and the competitive spirit remains undiminished, even if his body has a habit of letting him down.

And he showed that spirit to recover from the loss of the first set on a tie-break to the world number 160 Zsombor Piros of Hungary in their qualifier on Monday.

After the first four games of the second set were shared, Wawrinka reeled off ten in a row to take his place in the main draw.

Sousa v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

Although Wawrinka has won all their previous matches, that was in his prime, before the injuries began to take their toll. If his body holds up he is still capable of playing to his former level, but, sadly nowadays, that is a big “if”.
