Kudermetova wouldn’t necessarily be displeased with her returns from the US Open Series but given the kind of form she has been all season she would have loved to do better than the fourth round appearance at Flushing Meadows.
Earlier she had also made it to the semifinal at San Jose before she lost to Shelby Rogers despite entering the match as a favourite.
A couple of weeks of break on, Kudermetova now returns to action in Tokyo for the first time ever. And after getting a first round bye, faces an opponent who won just her second WTA main draw match of the season.
Clearly she couldn’t have hoped for a better opening match after that break and the question now is if she can deliver a strong performance first up.

Gomez Sends Sofia Packing
It wasn’t much of a surprise to see Gomez start off a distant 21/10 underdog to win her opener against a former Grand Slam winner Sofia Kenin. What was a bigger surprise was that she not only defeated Kenin but also did so in straight sets.
Gomez had an early break of serve in the first set and could have served it out at 5-4 before having to save a set-point in the tie-breaker that followed. She carved out the lead off her second set-point.
In the second set, Gomez was 5-1 up one moment and then saw that lead slip away as Kenin broke back twice to serve to make it 5-5. Gomez broke for the third time to clinch the match and reach round two, with the encounter lasting an hour and 47 minutes.
Kenin’s form had always been a suspect but Gomez cannot expect too many such favours from Kudermetova.

Kudermetova might be returning after a short break but she should be fit and raring to go, and we expect a straight-set win for her.
