Lorenzo Sonego v Sebastian Korda Head to Head

The pair have each other three times before, and Sonego leads their head to head series by two matches to one.

All three matches occurred last year, Sonego winning on hard courts in Montpellier and San Diego, but Korda triumphant on the clay in Parma.

Sonego Ends the Simon Fairy Tale

Sonego began his campaign in Metz by creating a minor upset when he beat the number seven seed Aslan Karatsev, earning him a second round match against the veteran Gilles Simon.

And the Italian found himself cast as the villain of the piece against a man playing in one of his final tournaments before retiring and who had the enthusiastic backing of the home fans.

Sonego earned the only break point of the first set, but could not convert it, and it went to a tie-break which he subsequently won.

And then he secured an early break in the second set, which he followed up with another.

To his credit, Simon pulled one back immediately, but, despite his best efforts, his race and tournament, were run.

Korda’s Fourth Quarter-Final of the Year

Korda enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2021, finishing runner-up in Delray Beach, and then winning his first senior title in Italy on clay.

And his form was good enough to earn him a place in the season ending NextGen Finals in Milan, where he got to the final before losing to Carlos Alcaraz, who has gone on to become world number one.

2022, so far, has yet to match those heights, but he has now reached his fourth quarter-final of the year after two straight set victories in France, beginning with the local man, Hugo Gaston, the world number 79, although he was taken to a second set tie-break in their match.

That earned him a tie against another Italian Lorenzo Musetti, and the story of that match was much the same as his first.

One break of serve was enough to give him the first set, and then he got the better of his opponent in a second set tie-break.

Sonego v Korda Prediction and Tip

According to the bookmakers, Korda is the clear favourite for this match, even though their head to head record suggests otherwise. Given, though, that they are rarely wrong, the American should progress, although it might be closer than the market currently suggests.
