Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz began his 2022 Metz campaign on Thursday with a straight sets win over Dominic Thiem in the second round.
The second seed Pole, who had a first round bye, saved both the break points that he faced against the Austrian and converted two of the 5 break points that he held to register a 6-3, 6-4 victory in an hour and 16 minutes.
Serving well throughout the match, the World No. 10 struck 12 aces and won 82% points on the back of his first delivery.
The win improved the 25-year-old to 34-16 this year. He has already featured in two finals this season, winning the title in Halle and finishing runner-up in Montreal. A win on Friday will take Hurkacz into his fifth semifinal of the year.
The win over Thiem was Hurkacz’s fifth in a row in Metz. Last year he had beaten Pablo Carreno Busta to win the title. Can he keep his title defence alive Friday?

Rinderknech Takes down the Fifth Seed
World No. 60 Arthur Rinderknech entered a third quarterfinal of the season by ousting Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round on Thursday.
The 27-year-old Frenchman, who reached his maiden ATP final at the Adelaide International this year, saved two set points to force the opening set tiebreak and then saved two more in the tiebreak, before converting a sixth set point to take the first set.
In the second set, Rinderknech got the solitary break in the eighth game before defeating the fifth seed 7-6 (13-11), 6-3.
The Frenchman had ousted Jaume Munar in a three-set opening round match.
Thanks to the two wins, he is now 15-14 on the tour and 29-19 overall, which also includes two Challenger finals. He won the Challenger title in Poznan, but finished runner-up in Vancouver.
Hurkacz v Rinderknech Prediction and Tip
Hurkacz would look to extend his streak in Metz. The second seed is the favourite in this contest and should advance in three sets.
