Veronika Kudermetova v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

Kudermetova and Zheng have never played each other before this in a competitive encounter.

Kudermetova Fights Past Haddad Maia

A lot was expected out of Kudermetova’s quarterfinal encounter against the in-form Beatriz Haddad Maia and for two sets, the match did not fail to deliver.

It was only in the third set that Kudermetova stole a match on Haddad Maia, registering a 6-7 (4). 7-6 (6), 6-1 win and sealed her semifinal berth for the sixth time in a WTA tournament this season.

Following on from a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Fernanda Gomez in the second round, Kudermetova was first up an early break and then fell 2-4 down in the first set. She then saved a couple of set-points at 4-5 only to lose the set in the tie-breaker that followed.

In the second, Kudermetova lost the early break advantage, then missed a set-point off his opponent’s serve and three more in the tie-breaker before closing out the equaliser.

An exhausted Haddad Maia found no answers to Kudermetova’s returning in the final set, but more importantly won just four points on the Russian’s serve to capitulate and hand her opponent the match.

Kudermetova will know she has gotten past the best player left in the tournament but can hardly get complacent against a rising star.

Zheng Eases Through against Liu

Starting out as an overwhelming favourite in her quarterfinal match against Claire Liu, Zheng was put to a bit of a test but still managed to come through in straight sets.

Needing a touch over two hours of court-time, Zheng registered a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Liu, making it a third successive straight-set win in the tournament. She had earlier sent Paula Badosa out, dropping just five games in the process.

Zheng, who had begun the season with a semifinal appearance at the Melbourne Summer Set 1, has now won three successive matches on four occasions this season.

Ranked 126th in the world at the start of the year, she is now sitting pretty at 36th and irrespective of the result, she can be expected to go into the new week ranked 31st. A win here will help her break into the top 30 but up against her is an opponent who will be no pushover.

Kudermetova v Zheng Prediction and Tip
