Jelena Ostapenko v Emma Raducanu
A very fascinating matchup awaits us is Seoul as Jelena Ostapenko takes on Emma Raducanu in the semi-final of the event. Ostapenko is a former champion of this event winning a few years ago here and she would like to get another chance to do so.
It will come if she beats Raducanu in their first meeting. The Brit has been playing the best tennis she has played all year long and she finally looks more comfortable and relaxed on the court. This event marked the first time she won three matches in a row and that tells you everything you need about the season.
It’s going to be a good one because both like to attack and both will do so at every chance. The power of Ostapenko should allow her to be more aggressive but neither of them likes to defend. I do think Raducanu will find herself on the back foot more often than her opponent but she most likely won’t beat herself as Ostapenko can.
It should be fireworks so take the over.

Veronika Kudermetova v Qinwen Zheng
Another interesting semi-final will happen across the sea in Tokyo with Kudermetova taking on Zheng. Both of these players have played superb tennis this week and they will get a chance to get into the final. Zheng had the easier match in the quarterfinal but she played a far weaker opponent.
Kudermetova took on one of the better players this year in Haddad Maia and scored a huge comeback win. It’s a victory that will give her a lot of confidence, particularly in this one as she is expected to be favoured. I do think Kudermetoa has the better chance of winning this match but it will be a slugfest. Neither play should win in two sets and that means we’ll probably see three.
Both Kudermetova and Zheng have a good serve and they both can hit the ball really hard from the baseline. The Russian has been a bit more streaky this year but that makes her more dangerous because she is on a great streak at the moment.
Expect three sets either way.

Liudmila Samsonova v Shuai Zhang
We’re staying in the same city for the 3rd tip as Samsonova takes on Zhang. Another strong result for Zhang who has been playing really strong tennis this year and it continued here. Some decent wins for the doubles specialist and a chance to get to the final.
Samsonova has been on teat herself particularly lately where her only defeat happened at the US Open against Tomljanovic. Samsonova is the more aggressive player by nature but Zhang has more variety which can hurt the Russian.
It’s going to be a good match but Samsonova is favoured for a reason. Her serve can be a weapon that is very hard to counter if it continues to work as well as it did. They never played before so it’s going to take some getting used to for both players.
I do think the Russian should be able to get this one.
