Alexander Bublik v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

Bublik won their only meeting against Wawrinka in Monte-Carlo earlier this year.

Bublik Battles Past Rune

World No. 44 Alexander Bublik edged past fourth seed Holger Rune in the quarterfinal on Friday to reach the final four of a tournament for the third time in his career.

After claiming the first set, the 25-year-old Kazakh player served for the match at 5-3 in the second set, but the determined Dane fought back, winning four games in a row and forcing the deciding set.

There was just one break of serve in the third set and that fell to Bublik, who finally won the contest 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in an hour and 59 minutes.

This was the third straight three-set win for Bublik. He had begun his campaign with a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over French qualifier Evan Furness. The two hour and 30 minute opening round win was followed by a two hour and 14 minute win over Emil Ruusuvuori. Bublik had come back from a set down to beat the Finn 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-3.

Bublik has improved to 27-22 this season. He won his maiden ATP title earlier this year in Montpellier and then reached another final in Newport, only to finish runner-up. Can he reach his seventh career final and a third of this year on Saturday?

Wawrinka’s Stunning Run Continues

Former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka reached his first semifinal since Doha 2020, when he ousted Sweden’s Mikael Ymer in a thrilling three-set quarterfinal on Friday.

The World no. 284 , who stunned the top seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round on Thursday, needed two hours and 50 minutes to beat the World no. 100, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

The Swiss saved 11 of 14 break points in the match and converted 3 of 11 to oust Ymer. The 16-time tour-level champion now has an opportunity to reach a 31st ATP final and a first since losing to Andy Murray in Antwerp in 2019.

Wawrinka, who last won a title in Geneva in 2017, will be eager to end the five-year title drought in Metz. He had come into the tournament with a 3-11 record in 2022 from all competitions, across levels, but has won five consecutive matches at the Moselle Open.

He made it to the main draw with qualifying round wins over Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros and then ousted Joao Sousa in straight sets in the opening round. But none of those wins would have given him more confidence than the win over Medvedev on Thursday. He carried that form in the quaretrfinals and could keep the rhythm going in the semifinal as well.

Bublik v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip

With Wawrinka back in top form, the seventh seed will have his work cut out. Expect Wawrinka to put up a great fight, but Bublik should eventually win in three.
