Jelena Ostapenko v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

Ostapenko leads by 1-0; they last met in the 2018 Eastbourne International.

Ostapenko in Fine Form

Jelena Ostapenko is set to compete in Tallinn with a fair bit of wind behind her back sails. Just last week, she capped a wonderful week in the Korea Open by reaching the final.

The Latvian fell to Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets but in the process, she did reach her third singles final of the season. The last two instances were in the Dubai Championships and Eastbourne International.

Jelena is now 29-16 for the season, ranking World No. 17. Overall, she has had a decent year with around $1.5 million in prize money and four WTA doubles finals as well.

That said, there have also been moments when she has fallen rather early. At times, those losses have come at the hands of lower-ranked players as well like Tatjana Maria, Madison Keys, Qinwen Zheng, Alize Cornet, and Dayana Yastremska. Clearly, Kanepi can follow the likes of these.

Kanepi, Hard at Work

At 37-year-old, Kaia Kanepi is among the oldest active players on the WTA Tour. And just like wine, she seems to be getting better with every day.

She is the current World No. 32 and is set to compete in her home tournament with a season tally of 26-15. Although her last few tournaments haven’t quite gone according to plan – with early exits in the US Open, Cincinnati, and Toronto – her experience and grit do make her a formidable adversary.

Earlier in the year, she was a quarterfinalist in the Australian Open and most recently, a runner-up in the Citi Open.

She is equipped to make things difficult for her rivals and given her long rest since her last tournament in New York, she seems physically ready for the week ahead.

Ostapenko v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko has the odds in her favour but Kanepi does make for a good bet. After all, the Estonian has beaten several top 10 players over her rich career and can stun Jelena – especially since the latter has had a hectic schedule recently.

Expect an entertaining match.
