Nuno Borges v Mirza Basic Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before.

This will be the first meeting between the 25 year old Portuguese, and the Bosnian, six years older.

Borges a Player on the Rise

Borgos was not originally scheduled to play in Sofia, but was drafted in as a replacement after Hubart Hurkasz of Poland dropped out of the tournament.

The 25-year old has had a fine season to date, breaking into the top 100 for the first time, and, in the process, Joao Sousa’s standing as the top ranked Portuguese player, long unchallenged, is facing some serios competition at last.

His rise is primarily attributable to his achievements on the Challenger tour, where he reached a final in Italy in March and one another in April.

That same month he stepped up to the senior tour and won the doubles on home soil in Estoril.

They were all clay court events, his favourite surface, but he showed his adaptability by qualifying for the US Open first time, and marked his New York debut with a five set win over the American Ben Shelton.

He was last in action back on the Challenger circuit on home soil in Braga, but was beaten in the second round there.

Lucky Loser Basic

Basic was actually beaten in straight sets in qualifying for Sofia by the German Jan-Lennard Struff, but earned a reprieve and enters the main draw as a lucky loser.

He did, though win the title here, back in 2018, beating the Romanian Marius Copil in the final, although the field then was not as strong as this week.

In those days he was ranked as high as 74 in the world, but all that seems a distant memory now for a player who has not won a match of any kind since reaching the second round of qualifying for Newport Beach back in July.

This will be his first match on the main tour this year.

Borges v Basic Prediction and Tip

Although Basic has good memories of this tournament he only qualified this time round due to a stroke of fortune, and he has not won a match of any sort for more than two months. Borges should win with ease.
