While Shapovalov had kick-started the season on a high, having won seven of his first nine matches that included a quarterfinal appearance at the Australian Open, things did not remain as good.
In fact they turned around for way worse than one would have imagined for the world number 24 who lost seven matches in a row and 10 from 11 encounters at one stage.
More recently, however, Shapovalov has managed a bit of a course correction through his showing at the Cincinnati Masters and US Open.
At the former, he overcame Grigor Dimitrov and Tommy Paul to reach the third round while at the latter there were wins against Marc-Andrea Huesler and Roberto Carballes Baena to make the same stage.
The question now is if Shapovalov can bring that same form forward to this tournament in Korea, where he had a first round bye.

Munar Benefits from Watanuki Injury
Clay-court specialist Munar had come into the tournament without too much winning traction, having lost three matches in a row and was expected to take his time to get going.
Three games into his opening round encounter against Yosuke Watanuki, however, his opponent retired from the match because of injury and Munar had broken his losing streak. Albeit in unusual circumstances and those that might not be very fulfilling.
Munar, who had made it through to the Cincinnati Masters as a qualifier before losing in the first round there, and in the second round at Winston-Salem had then gone on to crash out of the US Open and Moselle Open in his openers.
And with this win not giving him a lot of court-time anyway, it could be a case of having to re-aim at getting back to his winning ways.
