Marin Cilic v Dominic Thiem Head to Head
There have been four previous matches played between these two and Thiem has won every single time.
Three of these came on hard court surfaces while their latest was at the 2020 French Open where Thiem ran away a straight-set winner.

Unable to play at Wimbledon because of fitness concerns, Cilic returned to tennis at the US Open Series and ended up with a solid showing across the three tournaments he participated in.
A former US Open winner, Cilic made the third round at both, the Montreal and Cincinnati Masters before taking court for the season’s final Grand Slam at Flushing Meadows.
Cilic eased past his first two opponents and then registered a four-set win over Dan Evans in the third round to reach the last 16. And even in that loss to Carlos Alcaraz – who would go on to win the title – Cilic took his opponent to five sets before getting knocked out.
With Cilic showing this kind of form on hard court surfaces, it doesn’t come as a huge surprise he starts off a 1/2 favourite to win this.

Thiem Needs Three Against Djere
Despite his own form issues, Thiem wasn’t expected to be tested too much by the clay-court specialist Laslo Djere, his opponent in the first round.
It turned out to be a lot more complex than he would have liked as Thiem squeaked past Djere 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-4 to make it to the last 16. The match lasted two hours and 42 minutes and saw both players break the other three times.
It was Thiem’s poor first serve that caused him issues as the Austrian player got only 63% of his first serves in and won 73% of those points. As compared to that Djere had corresponding figures of 66% and 78% respectively.
The third game of the deciding set proved to be crucial as Thiem broke Djere and managed to hold on to his own serve for the rest of the encounter.
