Rune Holds Off Van Rijthoven

Holger Rune needed two tiebreaks in a one-hour-and-45-minute contest to see off the Netherlands’ Tim van Rijthoven in the opening-round of the Sofia Open.

After neither player could create a break point over the first 12 games of the match, the fifth seed Rune went on to dominate the tiebreak and take the first set.

The second set began with consecutive breaks, but both started serving well again and began holding serve, thus taking the match into a second tiebreak. Rijthoven missed out on a set point on his serve at 5-6 and Rune made the Dutch pay for that by winning the last three points of the match to complete a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6) victory.

Ranked no. 31st in the world, the 19-year-old improved his season record to 21-22 on the tour. He won his maiden ATP title in Munich, reached the quarterfinals of the French Open and also made it to the semis in Lyon.

Can he reach another quarterfinal with a won on Thursday?

Sonego Keeps Streak Going

Last week, Lorenzo Sonego captured his third ATP title by beating Alexander Bublik in the Moselle Open final.

The Italian had gone on to win the title without dropping a set in the five matches in Metz. In Sofia, the World No. 45  has picked up from where he left in Metz.

Sonego needed just an hour and 19 minutes to dispatch Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the opening round to extend his streak to six matches. Playing aggressively, Sonego won 86% points on his first serve. He didn’t face a single break point in the match, while he converted 2 of 3 to beat the Spaniard 6-3, 6-4.

Sonego, who was also a semifinalist in Buenos Aires and a quarterfinalist in Sydney, Cordoba and Stuttgart, will be looking to reach a  sixth quarterfinal on Thursday.

Rune v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Sonego is in red-hot form. He has a 6-0 record on indoor courts and hasn’t dropped a set in any of those matches. Expect him to dominate Rune and advance to the last eight stage.
