It’s been the kind of season on clay for Begu she would always remember. Having played 24 matches at all levels on the red dirt, Begu has carved out 20 victories this year including a title on the WTA circuit and another in the WTA 125 events lists.
Begu, who had also made it to the fourth round at the French Open, overcame Matilde Paoletti in her second round match here. She won 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 42 minutes to reach the last eight stage.
In what turned out to be a fighting encounter, Begu dropped her serve once in each of the two sets but always remained that step ahead of her opponent before sealing the match.

Bogdan Needs Three Sets against Schmiedlova
A semifinalist on the hard-courts of the Slovenia Open, Bogdan seems to have adjusted to life on clay rather well as she recorded her second successive win in the tournament here in Parma.
After a straight-set victory over Laura Pigossi in the first round, Bogdan carved out a hard-fought 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 result against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova to march into the last eight.
Bogdan, much like Begu, has had a solid season on clay, but more vitally has climbed up to 53rd in the world – her career-best ranking.
Having gotten ousted in the first round here last season, Bogdan will hope to put up a strong performance and go three better than that this time around.
