Plain Sailing for McDonald in Seoul

So far, it has been plain sailing for McDonald in Seoul this week, as he began his campaign with a straight sets win over the Spaniard, Pedro Martinez, the world number 67.

And then in the second round, he played another lucky loser Shintaro Mochizuki of Japan, the world number 417, who had been given a bye straight through to the second round after his prospective opponent, Taylor Fritz, withdrew from the tournament.

From the start ,the man from Japan was under pressure on his own serve, and the only surprise was that it took McDonald until the sixth game of the first set to finally break him.

Mochizuki did save a set point on his own serve, but McDonald converted his next one in the following game.

Another early break seemed to have put the American in control of the second set, but the Mochizuki evidently had not read the script, and broke back.

He then had break points to move ahead, could not take them, and was made to pay in full when he was then broken to love. He only won two more points after that.

Lucky Loser Kovacevic Flourishing

It has been a dream week for the American Kovacevic, who has a Serbian father and Bosnian mother.

Little known away from the Challenger circuit, he only made the main draw as a lucky loser, but. took full advantage of the opportunity given to him by beating the Serb, Miomir Kecmanovic, the number seven seed, in straight sets.

That earned him a second round tie against Chun Hsin Tseng of Taiwan, who had enjoyed his own slice of good fortune when his first round opponent Christopher O’Connell of Australia retired midway through their match with injury.

After the pair swapped early breaks, the first set settled down to a service battle, and it eventually went to a tie-break,  which Kovacevic claimed with his third set point.

Break points came and went in the second set, before Tseng was broken, giving the American the chance to save for the match. The pressure, though, got to him, the Taiwanese player earned five break back points, converting the fifth of them.

That meant another tie-break, and this time it was Tseng who emerged on top.

What proved to be the decisive moment of the match occurred in the fourth game of the third set when Tseng dropped his serve again. This time, Kovacevic did not let him off the hook, and another break helped seal the deal.

McDonald v Kovacevic Prediction and Tip

Just being in the quarter-finals is an achievement in itself for Kovacevic, but it would be a turn up for the books if he were to go further. McDonald should win this match with something to spare.
