Djokovic Remains Perfect Against Psopisil

Top seed and World no. 7 Novak Djokovic extended his perfect record against Vasek Pospisil to 6-0, after the Serb knocked out the Canadian in straight sets in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The 35-year-old, who had beaten Pablo Andújar 6-0, 6-3 in the second round, had a difficult start against Pospisil on Friday. Both players were solid on serve in the first set with neither getting broken. The set eventually needed a tiebreaker, which saw Djokovic race to a 5-1 lead. The Canadian responded by winning four consecutive points and drawing level at 5-5. The Serb managed to win the next two points though to edge the set.

In the second set Djokovic broke early to take a 3-0 lead, but Pospisil hit back taking the next three games in a row. Djokovic then got another break in the eighth game and finished off the match by winning the last three games for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory.

Djokovic won the Wimbledon and the Rome Masters this year and was a finalist in Belgrade. A win on Saturday will put him in a 127th final of his career, where he will be looking to clinch an 89th title.

Safiullin Sends Rinderknech Packing

Facing Djokovic in the semifinals will be Russia’s Roman Safiullin, who put up a clinical performance in the quarterfinal on Friday to defeat Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets.

Safiullin wasn’t broken in the previous match either as he defeated Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-1, 6-4. The Russian did drop a set in the first round match against Hugo Grenier of France but bounced back to win the contest 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The 24-year-old, ranked no. 104 in the world, improved his season record to 9-4 on the tour. He will be featuring in a second tour-level semifinal of the season on Saturday, having also reached the final four in Marseille. He has a 35-15 record across levels this year and that also includes two Challenger titles. Can he reach his maiden ATP title on Saturday?
