World no. 24 Denis Shapovalov entered his first final of the year by beating the United States’ Jenson Brooksby in the semifinals in Seoul.

The Canadian, who didn’t drop a set in his previous two matches, won his third consecutive match without losing a set, beating the eighth seed 7-5, 6-4.

Shapovalov converted 4 of 5 break points in the match and saved 1 of 3 that he faced.

The Canadian lefty had begun his campaign with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Jaume Munar in the second round and then knocked out Radu Albot 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinal.

The 23-year-old is 24-19 for the season. The Korea Open final will be the fifth final of his career and a first this year. He, however triumphed in just one of the previous four finals, winning the title in Stockholm in 2018.

Nishioka Repeats Washington Heroics

After ousting top seed Casper Ruud in a three-set quarterfinal, Yoshihito Nishioka scored another three-set victory, this time in the semifinals over the United States’ Aleksandar Kovacevic.

The Japanese left-hander, ranked no. 56th in the world, needed an hour and 54 minutes to beat the World no. 222, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Nishioka withstood 10 aces, converted 4 of 10 break points and saved 1 of 3 in the match. The Japanese made just 5 unforced errors compared to Kovacevic’s 29.

The Japanese had begun his campaign with straight sets wins over fifth seed Dan Evans and Taro Daniel in the first two rounds respectively. He then knocked out the World No. 2 Ruud, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

The 26-year-old, who was also a finalist in Washington earlier this year, will be playing in his fourth ATP final. He had won his only title in Shenzhen in 2018. Can he win a second title on Sunday?
