Aslan Karatsev has not won in a while as his most recent victory came in Cincinnati where he defeated Brandon Nakashima. That was on August 15th and since then the Russian only lost the matches he played. There have been a few but his form has been generally poor for a while.
The Russian is obviously hit his peak and since then he’s slowly regressed. Some of that is due to his play being worse but a lot of it due to players having more knowledge about how he plays and what his weaknesses are. His record this year is 15-25 and that’s quite poor but the indoor season might better that.
He’s a fairly solid indoor player having a solid record over the course of his career although he was only 4-3 last year.
This year it’s 1-4 and this will be a tricky challenge for him but also one that he can overcome. He didn’t face him before so he will need to stay alert.

Zhang the Qualifier
Zhizhen Zhang had to play the qualifiers to find his place in this event and he was able to do so. The opposition wasn’t the strongest but he was still able to win two matches and secure a spot in the main draw. Those matches give him a slight edge over Karatsev as he knows the conditions and courts better.
He should also be in a better competitive rhythm but that won’t matter much as both of these players are fairly similar when it comes to talent. The Chinese player has had a superb season so far with 45 wins and 22 losses but the vast majority of those matches were played on clay.
He’s best on that surface and hard courts are generally a bit weaker for him.
Indoor hard courts are even worse for him so despite having the better year overall he still won’t be favoured to win in this one. It’s their first clash so perhaps he can surprise Karatsev.

Both of these players have the same likelihood of winning the match. Either could win but I’m going to pick Karatsev to do so in three sets.
