Marin Cilic v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

Cilic has an overall lead of 3-2, but this year they have met thrice with Khachanov winning in Adelaide-1 and Doha and Cilic winning at the Canadian Masters.

Cilic Rallies Past Otte

After a strong showing in Tel Aviv last week, where he finished as runner-up, Marin Cilic got off to a winning start at the Astana Open on Wednesday.

The ninth seed Croatian bounced back from a set down to beat Oscar Otte in a two-hour-and-33-minute first-round contest.

Cilic won 80% (48 of 60) points on the back of his first serve and converted 3 of 16 break points to seal a 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory.

He had broken early in the first set, but was broken twice by the German in the last six games to concede the opening set. The World no. 14 however dominated the second set tiebreak to stay alive in the match. Having tied the match at 1-1, the Croatian raced away with the contest in the final set, breaking the World No. 55 two more times in the match.

Last week, the 34-year-old had played in his 36th tour-level final, but could not add to his 20 titles after going down to Novak Djokovic. It was Cilic’s first final of the season after he had fallen in four semifinals before, which included one at Roland Garros.

Khachanov Makes a Solid Start

Playing for the first time since his U.S. Open semifinal defeat to Casper Ruud, Karen Khachanov made a solid start at the Astana Open, defeating American Maxime Cressy in straight sets.

After both players held serve over the first eight games of the first set, Khacahnov broke the World no. 32 to surge ahead and then he closed out the set in the next game.

The Russian saved a set point at 4-5 (30-40) in the second set, before running away with the tiebreak for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory in an hour and 31 minutes.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist is coming off a maiden Grand Slam semifinal appearance. He had reached a sixth career final at the Adelaide international at the start of the season, but couldn’t win a fifth title, going down to Gael Monfils.

Ranked no. 18 in the world, Khachanov is 32-21 this season and is aiming to reach a ninth quarterfinal this year.

Cilic v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

It’s the fourth time that they will be meeting this year and fifth time since the St. Petersburg Open last year. So they are well aware of each other’s game. Both serve well and expect them to be on the money with their serves once again.

There is little to choose between the two, but the Croatian will hold a slight edge in this contest as he has been in top form recently and is coming off a very good tournament in Tel Aviv.
