Djokovic Cruises Past Garin in Opener

Picking up from where he left in Tel Aviv, Novak Djokovic made quick work of Cristian Garin in the first round of the Astana Open to win his fifth consecutive match in straight sets.

The World no. 7 had not dropped a set in Tel Aviv last week. And he kept the streak going in Astana, putting up a near-perfect performance against the Chilean, during a 6-1, 6-1 victory in just 62 minutes.

Djokovic didn’t face a single break point in the match, while he capitalised on 5 of the 8 breaking opportunities he had to advance to the next round.

The Serbian is chasing a 90th career title in Kazakhstan. He has won three this year, including the Wimbledon, and goes into the second round with a 29-6 season record behind him.

Dominating the World no. 81 from the start of the match on Wednesday, Djokovic dropped just one point on his serve and eight on return in the first set. He was equally dominant in the second, dropping just 5 points on serve and 11 on return. He is in sublime form at the moment and it will take something special from his next round opponent to stop him from charging ahead.

Van de Zandschulp Starts With an Easy Win

Botic Van de Zandschulp, too, had a near flawless start at the Astana Open, defeating Kazakh world card Beibit Zhukayev, who was making his tour-level debut in the first round.

Van de Zandschulp broke the World no. 327 thrice in the first set to go up by a set. The Kazakh responded by breaking the Dutchman in the very first game of the second, but the latter quickly regrouped and took control of the proceedings to win the contest 6-1, 6-1.

The World no. 34, who had reached his maiden final in Munich this year, but unfortunately had to pull out with an injury after just seven games, improved his season record to 38-24.

The 27-year-old will be looking to reach a sixth quarterfinal of the season on Thursday but in order to achieve that, he will have to produce a top-class performance against the 21-time major champion.

Djokovic v Van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

Given the sort of form that Djokovic is in at the moment, it will be really hard for the Dutch player to halt his march. Forget winning, even taking a set of the former no. 1 looks difficult at the moment. Expect the Serb to progress.
