Shapovalov Keeps Winning

Denis Shapovalov had an excellent week in Seoul as he reached the final of the event but he found himself beaten by a superb Yoshihito Nishioka who walked away with the trophy. He made the short trip to Tokyo and continued playing well beating a solid Steve Johnson in round one.

Now he faces Japanese player Noguchi who is not on the same level as he but that’s the danger. He can easily produce a huge level and with the crowd’s support stun Shapovalov. The Canadian is not one that doesn’t falter in pressure situations so while small there is potential for an upset.

I think Shapovalov will handle the pressure rather well because he is a very streaky player. When he’s playing he is hard to beat and at the moment he is truly playing really well. I expect him to win this match rather comfortably and book a spot in the quarterfinal.

Noguchi Wins In Round One

Noguchi was not favoured to win his round one matchup against Ramkumar Ramanathan but he was able to pull out the match where he nearly threw away the win in the final set. The Japanese player is ranked far outside of the top 100 and while he might get there one day his level is nowhere near that at the moment.

He is playing well right now because he is playing at home but Shpaovalov presents a challenge he won’t be able to easily overcome. He doesn’t have the power nor the necessary variety to trouble Shapovalov. The Canadian will have the upper hand in most and the only way Noguchi can win is if the Canadian botches the match.

That can always happen and he will need to be vigilant but he certainly can’t allow himself to throw away chances as he did against Ramanathan.
