Daniil Medvedev is playing rather solid tennis in his first match since the US Open and he’s in the quarterfinal. Two solid wins leave Medvedev looking very dangerous for Roberto Bautista Augt, a player who beat him four times in five matches.
The Russian has adapted well to the slow conditions in Astana and they actually help him win matches. He generally likes faster courts because he can finish off points easier yet slower courts give him plenty of chances to put the ball back and that’s the main problem for players here.
You simply can’t break him down easily but Bautista could do it with his precise groundstrokes.
Medvedev admitted doubt in his tennis prior to the event but he looks better and better with each match. This will be a proper test but one the Russian can pass.

Bautista Agut’s Good Year
Roberto Bautista Agut outplayed expectations for himself this year and posted a very strong 36-14 record so far. This event has been a continuation of good play from him as he won five matches in a row and all five came after the US Open and indoors.
He defeated Auger-Aliassime in round one and followed it up by beating Pavel Kotov easily in round two so he certainly looks very comfortable on the courts. Being 4-1 against Medvedev should give him further confidence leading up to this match and he actually beat him the last time they played.
He will need his best to do so obviously because the slow courts won’t allow him to break down Medvedev as easily but he can push him around the court and force him to play tough angles.
The Russian is not the most patient player so that’s another thing he can exploit.

While Bautista has thrived in this matchup I’m not sure he will do it once more. I do think Medvedev is getting back to his best and I do think his serve will push him past Bautista but it might be close.
