Stefanos Tsitsipas v Novak Djokovic Head to Head

This year they met in the final in Rome, which Djokovic won in straight sets. They are 2-2 on hard courts and Djokovic has a 4-0 record in finals.

Tsitsipas Scores a Comeback Win

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas fought back from a set down to knock out Andrey Rublev in the semifinals of the Astana Open on Saturday.

The Greek will now be playing in the sixth final of the season. While he won the titles in Monte-Carlo and Mallorca, he finished runner-up in Rotterdam, Rome and Cincinnati.

One of the most consistent players on the tour this year, the World no. 6 was off to a slow start in the semifinal of Saturday, as Rublev broke in the very first game of the match. The World no. 9 saved three break points in the first set, two in the final game, before serving out the set.

In the second set, both players held serve over the first nine games, before Tsitispas got the only break of the set in the 10th to draw level.

The Greek surged ahead in the third with the decisive break at 4-3 and then closed out the match for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in two hours and eight minutes. This is the first time this week that Tsitsipas has been forced to play the third set.

The Greek, who improved his season record to 53-18 after Saturday’s win, had begun his Astana campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mikhail Kukushkin. He then knocked out Luca Nardi 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) in round 2 before scoring a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 win over Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals. Tsitsipas has been broken just twice this week and will be eager to end Djokovic’s recent dominance on Sunday with another solid display.

Djokovic Fights Back Before Medvedev Retirement

After an engrossing one hour and 49 minutes of high quality tennis, Daniil Medvedev thought he won’t be able to continue and pulled out with a leg injury, allowing Novak Djokovic to reach the final of an ATP tournament for the second consecutive week.

Djokovic had just won an edge-of-the-seat tiebreak to tie the match at one-set apiece and he was all pumped up, when Medvedev walked up to him and disclosed that he won’t be able to continue. Not how Djokovic would have wanted the match to end but the Serb now has a chance of winning his 90th title on Sunday.

Djokovic could convert just one break point in the first set, while the World no. 4 got 2 of 2 to take a one-set-to-love lead. Neither could break in the second set and it eventually needed a tiebreak which Djokovic won 8-6.

The World no. 7 will now be competing in the fifth final of the season and 128th of his career. Even in a season where he hasn’t been able to compete much due to his COVID vaccine status, he is 33-6 and has won the titles in Wimbledon, Rome and Tel Aviv and finished runner-up in Belgrade.

He is currently on an eight-match winning streak, which started last week in Tel Aviv. This week, he was broken just once before the semifinals, as he knocked out Cristian Garin and Botic van de Zandschulp in the first two rounds and Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals, all in straight sets.

Can he keep his unbeaten streak alive on Sunday?

Tsitsipas v Djokovic Prediction and Tip

Djokovic’s current form and his dominance over Stefanos Tsisitpas makes him the favourite in the final. Tsitsipas will be under pressure having lost the last six matches against the Serb. He has also lost all four finals to Djokovic, and therefore the latter will have the psychological advantage going into this one.

Tip: Djokovic to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
