Liudmila Samsonova has been in terrific form recently and the 23-year-old brings an 18-1 record from her last 19 tour-level events.
The Russian is coming in as the Tokyo Open champion. She had defeated Qinwen Zheng in the final to pick her third title in the last four tournaments.
Samsonova’s first came at the Washington Open, where she ousted Kaia Kanepi for the title. She followed it up with another title in Cleveland, where she ousted Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the title clash.
Samsonova then reached the last 16 of the U.S. Open for the first time in her career before winning the title in Japan. It will be interesting to see if she can keep the hot streak going in San Diego.
Overall, she is 28-15 in 2022 and 24-8 on hard courts. She had a quiet start and had reached just one semifinal until the start of the North American hard court season. But it’s the current form that matters, and she is looking unstoppable at the moment.

Andreescu Has Played Few Matches on Hard this Year
Canada’s Bianca Andreescu missed the early part of the season with an injury and only began her 2022 campaign on clay in Stuttgart. Since then she has blown hot and cold.
Her best this year came on grass at the Bad Homburg Open, where the 22-year-old went on to reach the finals before falling to Caroline Garcia.
Andreescu is 16-10 overall this season and has played just three tournaments of hard, thus bringing a 4-3 record on the surface.
In her most recent tournaments, the Canadian lost in the opening round in San Jose and won two matches each in Toronto and the U.S. Open.
She will have mixed feelings about those two tournaments as she knocked out Daria Kasatkina and Alize Cornet in Toronto before going down in three to Qinwen Zheng. She also defeated Beatriz Haddad Maia, a player in top form en route the third round at the U.S. Open, before going down to Caroline Garcia.
So it isn’t that she is struggling on hard courts, but just a bit short on match practice having played a lot less on the surface this year.
Samsonova v Andreescu Prediction and Tip
Given Samsonova’s recent form, it will take a massive effort from Andreescu to prevent the Russian from progressing into the next round. The Canadian will put up a fight but current form favours Samsonova.
