Wang, Boasting Confidence
21-year-old Xiyu Wang from China has been nothing short of a revelation this season. Alongside Qinwen Zheng, the youngster has made her country proud by rising through the ranks on the WTA Tour.
Wang is the current World No. 59 and has a tally of 38-23. Seeded number seven in Cluj-Napoca, she hopes to make up for her recent early exits from Tallinn and Ostrava.
That said, Xiyu has had her moments time and again this season. In the US Open swing, she was a semifinalist in the Citi Open and made it as far as round three in New York and Granby. In these events, she beat the likes of Maria Sakkari, Tatjana Maria, Donna Vekic, and Victoria Azarenka.
She also took home the runner-up silverware from three ITF and one Challenger finals.

Cristian, Tapping into Home Advantage
By contrast, Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian has had a year to forget. In January, she was ranked in the late 50s; now, she is #83.
Of course, a huge part of it has got to do with her absence from the tour. The 24-year-old was out of action between February and August due to a severe knee injury.
After the Doha Open, her next event was the New York major, where she fell to Anett Kontaveit in the opener. Jaqueline endured a similar fate in Monastir and Tallinn, respectively, at the hands of Elise Mertens and Katie Boulter.
Between these events, she did win an ITF event in France to build some rhythm.

Wang has the advantage owing to her momentum and form, but Cristian, who is looking fitter by the day, will rally the crowds behind her and hope to get a much-needed win. Expect an entertaining game of tennis.
