Coco Gauff will be making her first appearance since her quarterfinal finish at the U.S. Open.
The 18-year-old American has had a brilliant run this year, which included a first-ever final at a Grand Slam. But she couldn’t win her maiden major title, falling to Iga Swiatek in the final.
Gauff was a semifinalist in Adelaide-2 and Berlin and has had four quarterfinal finishes this season. Three of her last four tournaments have seen her reach the last eight but she hasn’t gone beyond that stage. These include the San Jose Open, Canadian Open and the U.S. Open.
Gauff is 34-17 overall and 19-11 on hard courts this year. Over the last four tournaments she has gone 9-4.
A two-time champion from three career finals, Gauff has gone deep in a number of tournaments this year but has reached just one final. But thanks to her consistency she has risen to a career-high ranking of number 8 and has been on that position for the last five weeks.

Montgomery Beats Two Top 50 Players to Qualify
Facing Gauff in the opener will be Robin Montgomery, who took down two top 50 players in the qualifiers to reach the main draw.
The 18-year-old American ousted World no. 27 Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-3 in the first qualifying round and then came back from a set down to beat World no. 43 Bernarda Pera 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
Montgomery, who was the girls’ singles and doubles champion at the U.S. Open last year, is 27-13 this year. She has reached two ITF finals this year, but couldn’t add to her only ITF title she won in 2020.
Ranked no. 294th in the world, the left-hander will look to make an impression in San Diego. She has already beaten two very solid players and may give the World no. 8 a tough fight in the first round.
Gauff v Montgomery Prediction and Tip
Gauff is far more experienced at this level than the fellow 18-year-old. She has also been very consistent this year. She will be wary of Montgomery after what the latter did in the qualifiers but the sixth seed should move into the next round.
