Pliskova Looking to Overcome Recent Setbacks

After a good run during the North American hard court season, Karolina Pliskova failed to deliver in the last two tournaments.

The Czech won her first round match in Tokyo against the relatively unknown Isabella Shiniakova but lost to Petra Martic in the second round. Things were even bad for her in Ostrava last week, as she went down to Alycia Parks in the opening round.

So there may be some nerves as she goes into the first round match in San Diego, but the world no. 22 will be determined to overcomes the recent setbacks and make a solid comeback.

Pliskova, who had a delayed start to the season after picking up a hand injury before the start of the Australian Open, struggled in the first six tournaments that she featured in. She found some form in Strasbourg, when she reached the final four, but her struggle to win more than two matches in a row continued even after clay curt event. It was only when she began the north American swing that she started winning on a consistent basis.

The Czech reached the semifinals in Toronto and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in two of the most notable performances of the season. But she seems to have lost that flow and will be eager to get that winning form back.

Dolehide Qualifies With Wins Over Top 50 Players

Caroline Dolehide ousted two top 50 players in the qualifying round to reach the main draw in San Diego.

The World no. 181 defeated World no. 49 Madison Brengle of the U.S. 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.

She continued the momentum in the second qualifying round, knocking out World no. 38 Jil Teichman 6-4, 6-2 on Sunday.

This will just be her fourth tour-level main draw appearance this season. She was knocked out of the first round of the Australian Open after she qualified for the main draw. She won her first round match in Guadalajara after coming through the qualifiers and also won her opener in San Jose, where she was playing as a lucky loser, but she lost in the Round of 16 of both the tournaments.

Dolehide is 22-21 overall this season and her confidence will be sky-high after those two qualifying round victories. Can she build on that in the main draw?

Pliskova v Dolehide Prediction and Tip

Her current form may be a bit dodgy, but Pliskova’s experience should help her overcome the recent setbacks and start well in San Diego. Dolehide will put up a fight, but Pliskova should progress to the next round.
