Garbine Muguruza v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

Rybakina leads 2-1. Muguruza won the first matchup in Berlin last year, while Rybakina won at the Olympics in 2021 and in Cincinnati this year. None of their matches have gone into the third set.

Muguruza Has Had a Tough Season

After a 42-17, multi-trophy-laden season, Garbine Muguruza will be mightily disappointed with how she has performed in 2022.

The Spaniard has won two matches in a row just twice this season and brings a poor 12-16 record to San Diego. The two tournaments where she won two successive matches were the Qatar Open, where she was a quarterfinalist and the U.S. Open where she lost in the third round.

The World no. 13, who has won 10 titles from 17 finals in her career, most recently featured in the Japan Open. She won her second round match after receiving an opening round bye, but fell to Liudmila Samsonova in the last eight stage.

Having not found any sort of rhythm throughout the year, Muguruza will be desperate to get going in San Diego. However, she has a rocky road ahead. She faces an extremely tough opening round opponent in the Wimbledon champion and if she progresses to the next round then she will be up against the top seed Iga Swiatek.

Rybakina in Good Form

Facing the two-time Grand Slam champion will be Elena Rybakina, who herself joined the list of major winners this year by clinching the Wimbledon title.

The Kazakh player has been in very good form since winning the grass court major and brings a 38-19 season record to San Diego. Last week she knocked out Madison Keys, Aliaksandra Sasnovic and Petra Kvitova on her way to the semifinals in Ostrava, but couldn’t reach her fourth final of the year after going down to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Of the three finals that Rybakina featured in this year, she won the Wimbledon title by beating Ons Jabeur in the final, but lost to Ash Barty in Adelaide and to Katerina Siniakova in Portoroz.

She is 10-5 from her last 15 matches, dating back to the Cincinnati Open, where she was a quarterfinalist.

Overall, the 23-year-old World no. 26 has a 38-19 season record and she is 21-12 on hard courts. Given how good her form is at the moment she will be expected to win her opener and set up a second round clash with Swiatek.

Muguruza v Rybakina Prediction and Tip

Rybakina was dominant in her win over Muguruza in Cincinnati this year. She has been consistent throughout the season and has displayed far better form than Muguruza. Expect the Kazakh to extend her head-to-head lead over the Spaniard.

Tip: Rybakina to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
