In the Race to the WTA Finals, Aryna Sabalenka is ranked #7 and looks all set to compete in Texas in three weeks’ time. However, an early exit here may complicate her prospects.
The 24-year-old Belarusian is ranked World No. 5 and is set to compete in San Diego with a bye into round two. Her lack of momentum may be a problem, given that her last tournament was the US Open, where she was a semifinalist.
That said, Sabalenka has done well in the American tournaments of late, reaching the semis in Cincinnati and the quarterfinal in San Jose. Earlier in the year, Aryna was also a finalist in Stuttgart and Den Bosch.
Her year-to-date record is 29-18, backed further by an impressive pedigree.

Stephens Knocks Out Teichmann
It has been a season to forget for the former world number three, US Open champion Sloane Stephens.
Her tally is now 15-15, following an impressive 6-1, 7-6(2) win over Jil Teichmann in round one. Looking at her recent form, the American has not moved past round two in her last four tournaments – including the Parma Ladies Open.
Before that, she fell in the opening matches in Bad Homburg, Wimbledon, and the Citi Open.
Most of her season has gone by in this early exits, barring two instances. She won the Abierto Zapopan in February – her first singles title in four years – and late reached the quarterfinal in the French Open.
Sabalenka v Stephens Prediction and Tip
Sabalenka has the advantage in this match owing to her overall season and form. However, Stephens is the home favourite and will rally the crowd for a much-needed boost.
There is no doubt about her abilities either, having made it to the final of several big events. If she can channel some of that rhythm from the Teichmann match here, she may very well give the Belarusian a run for her money.
