Kalinina Moves Past Bouchard
World No. 45 Anhelina Kalinina is hoping for a last-minute push to position her nicely for the next season. She is now 22-18.
In June, the 25-year-old peaked at the #34 spot in the singles ranking, driven by the quarterfinal results in Madrid, Charleston, and Eastbourne.
In these two tournaments, the Ukrainian beat several big names like Maria Sakkari, Yulia Putintseva, Sloane Stephens, Elena Rybakina, Garbine Muguruza, and Emma Raducanu.
However, her pedigree lacks silverware; all she has is a singles runner-up feat from Budapest last year and 24 finals from the ITF circuit. Kalinina has also fallen early in many tournaments – the most recent being the US Open, where she retired against Petra Kvitova with an illness.
Following a long recovery break, Anhelina found herself in an easy match with Eugenie Bouchard. She got to round two after the Canadian withdrew in the second set, citing fitness concerns.

Bonaventure Beats Gracheva
Ysaline Bonaventure had to work hard to earn her first-round win. Playing Russia’s Varvara Gracheva, she won the match 7-5, 7-5, in an hour and 39 minutes.
The 28-year-old is currently World No. 126, although it does not quite do justice to her decent season. She is now 43-24, following her time in Cluj-Napoca, beating Kateryna Baindl and Cristina Dinu in the qualifiers.
She arrived for the tournament following a quarterfinal stint in Tallinn, beating Shelby Rogers and Jil Teichmann en route. That was her best WTA result of the season.
Bonaventure will look to build on that; in all fairness, her chances are good. This year, she reached two ITF finals and closing rounds in a few other events on the circuit.
Kalinina v Bonaventure Prediction and Tip
Kalinina may be the odds-on favourite, but Bonaventure is well-placed to cause an upset. The latter has played a fair bit of tennis this year, and that momentum will come in handy here.
This match has all the makings of being a long affair.
