Stan Wawrinka v Richard Gasquet Head to Head

Wawrinka Was a Runner-up in Antwerp in 2019

Stan Wawrinka has received a wild card for this event. He is 3-1 in Antwerp, having finished runner-up to Andy Murray in his only appearance in the tournament in 2019.

After missing out almost the entire year due to a left foot surgery last year, Wawrinka returned in 2022 during the clay season and soon fell out of the top 300.

Two wins in Rome pushed him into the 200s, but a string of first round defeats once again pushed him back outside the top 300.

However, it was in Metz last month, when playing as a qualifier, the Swiss knocked out Daniil Medvedev en route the semifinals. He couldn’t reach a first final since 2019, but that run helped him gain significantly in the rankings as he moved into the top 200.

A 16-time tour-level winner from 30 finals, the three-time Grand Slam champion is chasing his first title since Geneva 2017.

Ever since falling to Alexander Bublik in the semis in Mets, he went down fighting in the opening round in Astana to Adrian Mannarino. He will be oping to start with a win on Monday to build on his previous showing in Antwerp.

Gasquet Was a Champion in 2016

In 2016, Richard Gasquet won the Antwerp crown on his tournament debut. He also reached the semifinals in 2018 but has lost in the first round over the last three years.

The World no. 83 comes into this year’s tournament with a 22-17 overall record on the tour. In the previous tournament, in Florence last week, he went down easily in the opening round to Brandon Nakashima.

While the Frenchman has not made deep runs too often this year, his most notable performance was a semifinal finish in Geneva. He also had four quarterfinal finishes in Montpellier, Marrakech, Estoril and Winston-Salem.

So overall it’s not been a very encouraging season for the 36-year-old 15-time tour-level winner. He last reached a final in Umag last year. Can he make a good start in Antwerp?

Wawrinka v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

Wawrinka showed in Metz that he can still pull off some big wins, but he has played very little this season and his losses outnumber his wins. Gasquet’s recent form has been concerning but he has won matches on a regular basis this year. It’s going to be a good battle and may need a third set to separate the two. Gasquet’s form throughout the year and his consistency gives him a slight edge going in the opener.
