Nishioka Brings Good Form to Antwerp

Yoshihito Nishioka had fallen out of the top 100 in June, but the Japanese is finishing the year very strongly. Thanks to his solid performances over the last two months he has broken into the top 40 and is currently sitting on a career-high ranking of no. 39, achieved this week.

The left-handed Japanese is 16-14 overall on the tour in 2022, and just two weeks ago he claimed his second career title and the first of the year in Seoul. Nishioka defeated Casper Ruud en route the final and then trumped Denis Shapovalov to win the ATP 250 title.

It was the second time that Nishioka had reached the title clash this year. Earlier he had beaten five top 40 players, including Andrey Rublev, on his way to the Washington Open final, but couldn’t win a sixth match in a row, going down to Nick Kyrgios in the ATP 500 event.

Nishioka also featured in two Challenger finals in 2022, both on hard. He won the title in Columbus but finished runner-up in Cleveland.

Following his win in Seoul, he made a first round exit in Tokyo. He will be eager to overcome the setback and return to winning ways.

Van Assche to Make his Debut

This is turning out to be a terrific month for 18-year-old Luca Van Assche. The Frenchman, who reached his maiden Challenger final this month, has now qualified for his first-ever ATP tournament.

The 2021 French Open boy’s singles champion showed great resolve as he won back-to-back three-setters in the qualifying rounds.

Van Assche fought back from a set down to defeat Austria’s Lucas Miedler 6-7, 7-5, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and then ousted compatriot Geoffrey Blancaneaux 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 to qualify.

The World no. 241 will be making his debut on the tour on Tuesday.

Van Assche was the finalist at the Lisbon Challenger earlier this month, but he finished runner-up to Marco Cecchinato. Can he impress on his debut?

Nishioka v Van Assche Prediction and Tip
