David Goffin has seen a lot of ups and downs this season. He didn’t start the season well, but a title in Marrakech started the turnaround for him.
Goffin, who had struggled to win consecutive matches in the first quarter, finished the clay season with a 14-5 record.
The 31-year-old Belgian carried that form to grass and reached a second quarterfinal at Wimbledon. But the four-time major quarterfinalist once again fell in the last eight stage.
As the tour moved to the hard courts of North America, Goffin once again went out of form.
Following his Wimbledon exit, he made six consecutive first round exits. He did win a few qualifying matches and a couple of Davis Cup matches, but nothing on the ATP Tour.
In his last tournament, he made it to the main draw in Astana as a lucky loser but shocked World no. 1 Carlos Alacaraz in straight sets in the first round. He didn’t go past the second round, but the stunning upset of the Spaniard suggested he may be returning to form. He will be hoping to make a brisk start on Tuesday.

Can Bailly Impress at Home
World no. 1185 Gilles Arnaud Bailly has been handed a wild card for the tournament.
The 17-year-old had caught the eye at the junior level this year, reaching the boy’s singles finals at the French Open and the U.S. Open. But the Belgian didn’t win either of the two titles.
He fell to Gabriel Debru at Roland Garros and went down fighting against Spain’s Martín Landaluce at Flushing Meadows.
Bailly has featured in two Futures tournaments this year and has a 4-3 record from those matches.
He is presented with a great opportunity to take on a local hero in front of the home crowd and he will be eager to make an impression in his first ever ATP match.
