Yoshihito Nishioka v Jaume Munar Head to Head

39th-ranked Nishioka has never faced 55th-ranked Munar before this.

Nishioka Floors Van Assche

Yoshihito Nishioka kept up his hopes of attaining a seeding spot at next year’s Australian Open with a dramatic win over French qualifier Luca Van Assche.

Nishioka, whose form during this fall season has pushed him to a career-high ranking of No. 39, made amends after dropping the first set 7-5 to the 18-year-old.

Nishioka’s fluid shots deserted him in the first set particularly in key moments of the match, being broken right at the end to concede the set.

It was tough to attribute a specific area in his game that was not working, but credit had to be paid to Van Assche who was playing better tennis and certainly showing wisdom beyond his years.

But from the second set onwards, Nishioka grabbed a stranglehold of this match breaking the qualifier three times to force a decider. The third set was just as nail-biting as the first, with so many twists and turns.

Nishioka blew seven match points before eventually closing out victory in the tiebreak.

Munar Stuns Van Rijthoven

Jaume Munar entered his first-round match in Antwerp as the underdog and you couldn’t really argue with that. His opponent Van Rijthoven had already secured two big wins from qualifying and was well-adept and acclimatized to the court conditions.

And besides that, Munar does not hold a particularly rosy record on indoor hard courts, with just nine wins on the pro tour on the surface.

But on Tuesday, he got the better of his Dutch opponent despite dropping the first set in the longest match of the week thus far.

The Spaniard’s relentless approach and counterpunching abilities saw him claw his way back into the match after breaking Van Rijthoven at the start of the second set. He went on to consolidate in each of his service games to force a decider.

And in the third set, Munar managed to restore parity despite going down a break. The set eventually went into a tiebreak where a single mini-break decided it.

Nishioka v Munar Prediction and Tip

Nishioka’s form and talent should get him across the finish line in this one. After living in compatriot Nishikori’s shadow for many years, he looks motivated to step out of it judging by his recent form.
