Consistent Gauff Aims for Another Solid Start
This year’s French Open finalist Coco Gauff begins her Guadalajara campaign in the second round on Wednesday.
It’s been a brilliant year for the 18-year-old, who brings a 36-18 season record into the tournament. Gauff’s been very consistent throughout the year and her recent form has been pretty good as well. She has reached the quarterfinals in four of the last five tournaments and that includes her maiden last eight appearance at the U.S. Open.
Last week, she competed at the San Diego Open, and won the first two rounds, but couldn’t beat Iga Swiatek in the last eight stage. Swiatek had also denied Gauff a maiden Grand Slam title after the World no. 1 defeated her in the final in Roland Garros this year.
Gauff has delivered results on all surfaces. She is 21-12 on hard courts, but has reached just one semifinal on the surface this year and that was in Adelaide-2. She has been stopped in the quarterfinals five times on hard courts this season.
Despite this being a very productive year for the American, she has reached just one final. The two-time tour-level champion, who reached a career-high ranking of no. 7 this week, will be eager to reach at least one more final. Could that happen in Guadalajara?
She won’t look that far just yet and will be focused on the first match, and hoping to get off to a quick start.

Cocciaretto Powers Past Potapova
Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto put on a powerful performance to trounce Transylvania Open semifinalist Anastasia Potapova in the first round on Tuesday.
Ranked no. 92 in the world, Cocciaretto had entered the main draw through the qualifying rounds.
Cocciaretto dropped serve in the very first game of the match, but she made a resounding comeback, breaking the Russian thrice to take the first set. She continued to dominate in the second, racing to a 5-0 lead before the World no. 44 finally held a serve to avoid being bageled. Cocciaretto finished off the match in the next game for a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
The 21-year-old had also scored convincing wins in the qualifying rounds. She knocked out Carol Zhao 6-3, 6-1 in the first qualifying round and Renata Zarazúa 6-4, 6-4 in the second qualifying round.
Overall, she is 39-20 this season and 7-8 on the tour. She is a better payer on clay and lacks experience playing on hard. Can she pull off an upset on Wednesday and keep her chances alive in the tournament?
