Third seed Frances Tiafoe begins his campaign in the second round on Thursday. The American, who is sitting on a career-high ranking of No. 17 achieved on October 10, has been in brilliant form recently.
After reaching his first ever Grand Slam semifinal at the U.S. Open, Tiafoe reached the second final of the season in Tokyo. But just like Estoril earlier this season, he finished runner-up in the tournament. While it was Sebastian Baez who defeated him in Estoril, Taylor Fritz denied him a second career title in Japan.
Tiafoe, who won his only title in Delray Beach in 2018, has five runner-up finishes since then.
The 24-year-old is playing in Stockholm for the second time. He had reached the semifinals on his debut last year.
Overall he is 32-21 this season and 20-12 on hard courts, but in the last 13 matches he has a 10-3 record. Can he keep his strong run going in Sweden.

Ymer Holds Off Otte
Playing Tiafoe in the second round will be Swedish wild card Elias Ymer, who held off a strong comeback bid from Oscar Otte, to win a two-hour-and-48-minute first-round contest on Wednesday.
The World no. 129 took the first set in the tiebreak after no player could break in the opening set.
Tables turned in the second set tiebreak though, with Otte dominating and tying the match at one-set apiece. The third set was a tight one too with both players holding serve over the first six games. But Ymer got a decisive break in the eighth before serving out the match in the next for a 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 victory.
Ymer won 78% points on his first serve and struck 43 winners, while winning 122 points in the match, four more than Otte.
Ymer is 39-28 overall from all levels. His best performance this season came in Pune, where he was a semifinalist.
